4 lessons I learnt building models for consulting projects.

Models help me understand change—and communicate proposals in a compelling way to gain commitment.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

1️⃣ 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹l𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝘆𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀.
While analysis helps you understand parts of a system, synthesis enables you to see the system as a whole. It’s about connecting the dots to develop a holistic understanding.

2️⃣ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀.
To model effectively, think about how different stakeholders view the situation:

⇢ How does the project look to an engineer?
⇢ What’s the CTO’s perspective?
⇢ What change means for a finance manager?

Incorporate multiple viewpoints into your models to make them richer and more relatable.

3️⃣ 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀.
Here are methods I’ve found effective:

⇢ Metaphors, symbols, and reference stories.
⇢Prototypes and hands-on demos.
⇢ Project plans and roadmaps.

4️⃣ What makes a great model?
Include these key elements:

⇢ The importance of the proposed change to the organization.
⇢ The needs of all stakeholders.
⇢ Value criteria and long-term benefits.
⇢ A transition plan from the current to desired state.
⇢ Examples of specific behaviours that will change.
⇢ Where and when the change will take place.

Take note, if you're not using modelling prep-sale you're missing a trick.
