YOU choose

My biggest productivity breakthrough was a mindset shift, not a time management tip.

Like most people working in a corporate role I had a job. I was lucky that mine never felt like being on a hamster wheel. It was intellectually challenging and interesting.

And I was a model employee. I worked hard, did what was asked of me, listened to the bosses, and overperformed. In return I felt secure (even though I know that doesn’t exist), was paid well, and got promoted.

All good you might think.

But therein is the corporate lifestyle trap.
Not rocking the boat for fear of lost income.

But that mindset and the underlying dynamic can be changed.

How?

I started thinking of the company I was employed by as a supplier. It was a resource I could deploy to get the results I wanted. So I started asking for resources to get things done, make me more productive, and serve clients to win business.

And it worked.

Making sensible demands, not blindly accepting commands.

That’s where leadership starts.
That’s when you start driving the bus.
That’s when you develop something unique.

What my friend Adrian Sandy 🗝️ calls uncopyable.

I’d explained this to lots of people during my years in independent practice.

Many responded with “but I can't do that here”.
Which is true… if you decide to believe it.
Others have been more positive.
And took the initiative.

They’re leaders today.

“Why do you write all this stuff?” She asked. Fair question and a simple answer. I get clearer when I write my thoughts down. I’m not writing to persuade you. I’m writing to persuade myself. I’m writing to see things differently. Sometimes when the writing seems useful

Does consultative selling work with public sector clients?

Does consultative selling work with public sector clients? In my last post, I recommended Consultative Selling by Mack Hanan. Reading the book, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s all about commercial business. The language is all about profit improvement. Hanan puts that at the core of client conversations.
